If you are in the next corporate ERP, MRP or small business accounting selection phase, we would like to offer you small technology oriented overview of Microsoft Dynamics GP, formerly known as Great Plains Dynamics and eEnteprirse.
In our opinion, simple cases of out of the box accounting application implementation do not require a lot of research: if your business processes are very straight forward: GL, AP, AR, Payroll – then be sure you do not make a mistake and do not pick somebody who does GP implementation for you for the first time. For the rest of you, who is interested in custom business processes, real time ecommerce integration, EDI or Electronic Document Interchange, warehouse management and barcoding, we recommend this publication:
1. Integration Manager. IM allows you to integrate text file, simple ODBC compliant Databases as well as so-called Advanced ODBC data sources. Advanced means that you can deploy all ODBC standard SQL expressions, including union. In the case of deploying union, you can split one text file line into multiple lines on Sales Invoice, for example. Plus IM allows you data translation technique, where you can upload Excel data translation file to Integration Manager field (if you are collection management agency, your customers are your vendors and you will need to translate your customer bank records to the vendor, for whom you collect)
2. eConnect integrations. IM is flexible, but eConnect is Software Development Kit, and by being that, it opens such lucrative perspectives as realtime integration for ecommerce application for example. eConnect allows you to create, modify, delete master records (customer, vendor, GL account, employee, address) and work transactions (SOP Quote, Order, Invoice, Return, etc.). eConnect, however doesn’t have Batch Posting capabilities. In order to post your GP batches directly from ecommerce web application we recommend you to deploy Alba Spectrum Posting Server
3. Dexterity customizations. Great Plains Dex is IDE, programming language and popular add-ons development tool for Great Plains Dynamics GP. You should consider Dex module life cycle with its natural needs to Great Plains version upgrade, programming new custom logic
