Microsoft Dynamics GP ERP, current version is 10.0 has a list of pretty robust modification and development tools, including Microsoft Dexterity, eConnect, SDK for Visual Studio Programmer, SQL stored procedures and views, VBA with Modifier.

Plus you can deploy integration tools,Great Plains Customization and Software Programming Articles such as GP Integration Manager with the options of data translation, scripting, advanced ODBC queries.  Based on your programming skills and preferences you can use one tool or another, however it is helpful to know the typical recommendations in tools selection:

1.       eConnect.  This tool was specially recommended and initially dedicated to eCommerce web developers, who are linking e-commerce site with GP ERP as accounting back office.  eConnect was introduced to serious integration around 2004.  Since then eConnect scope was extended to automate master records and work transaction creation in most of the native GP modules: SOP, GL, POP, RM, PM, IV, Payroll, Project Accounting and others.  eConnect doesn’t post batches automatically and if you need your Sales Invoices to be posted directly from e-commerce, you need Albaspectrum posting server add-on

2.       Great Plains Dexterity.  This tool is in essence GP architecture, it is written in C programming language as a shell with its own proprietary scripting language Sanscript.  Dex is almighty and there are no barriers in its programming and modification power.  However Dex programmers are not commonly available on the job market and you need to make your own subcontractors search in your area or appeal to nationwide support for Dexterity developing

3.       SQL scripting.  Technically there is a possibility to do direct data pulling and in certain cases data insertion to GP tables.  The second option requires more expertise and accuracy simply to avoid data damage and inconsistency cause

4.       Reporting.  Just briefly – FRx is the preferred tool for Financial reporting (Balance Sheet, Profit and Loss Statement, Statement of Cash Flow, consolidated statements), Crystal Reports and SRS in our opinion at this time are very similar in what they can efficiently do (extend such native tools as ReportWriter and Advanced Financial Analysis), Report Writer reports are pretty much for the purpose of placing logos and reshuffling fields on built-in reports: SOP blank invoice form is probably one of the most popular ones
