Small business ERP implementation has some percentage of failures. Initial implementation partner selection is very important and if you do your homework the risk of failure goes down dramatically.

We do not recommend you to pick the first offer or in other words to entrust your Small Business ERP implementation to the guys who are doing aggressive telemarketing.  You should check if this consulting firm has experience implementing accounting application in your industry,SAP Business One New York Second Opinion or Recovering the Project Articles if they have technical expertise in such areas as SAP B1 SDK programming, Crystal Reports and probably complex data conversion projects via Data Transfer Workbench and Advanced ODBC data connections.  You should also be aware that reseller has two sources of revenue from the SB1 project.  The first one is software licenses margin and the second is billable consulting hours.  You have to pay upfront for the software license.  If later on you would have to appeal to another VAR for second opinion you should understand that that alternative firm doesn’t have a stimulus in software licenses margin.  Let’s take a look at the way to seek for second opinion and recover failing implementation project:

1. Local small consulting firm versus nationwide provider with local consulting presence.  Local firms are typically small ones with emphasis on CPA style implementation and user training.  These firms often have to take whatever comes their way and this is why they do not specialize in industry niches.  There might be also not enough business to afford SAP BO technical consultants in staff for securing such projects as software development, Crystal Reports design or Data Transfer Workbench Advanced ODBC data migration.  In contrast nationwide firms typically have dedicated Software Development departments where challenging customization and integration projects should have high success ratio.  Hourly consulting rates are comparable with possible tendency of higher rate from the side of nationwide resellers.  In ideal situation you might be able to find nationwide firm with local office in your area

2. Customization and importance to own source code.  It is possible to create custom objects such as User defined fields and tables in setting without programming.  However programming if often required to add animation to these custom objects.  Programming is typically done in Microsoft Visual Studio C# or VB projects.  When you are contracting consulting partner to do SDK coding be sure that you have the clause in the contract about owning source code.  If you do not have access to the source SDK code then there is no way for rescuing VAR to fix software bugs and further advance custom business logic.  If you do not have source code SDK customization should be reprogrammed from scratch

3. Second opinion in data conversion.  Here favorite tool is Data Transfer Workbench where you have to fill out so-called CSV or often referred as Excel templates.  Every consultant knows the DTW and templates.  However not every consultant has experience in exporting data from your legacy accounting package, such as probably QuickBooks, Great Plains Accounting for DOS or Dynamics on Pervasive SQL Server 2000.  If you plan historical data migration including millions of historical Sales invoices CSV templates might be impractical as modern computing power is not capable to cleanse millions of rows in Excel.  Historical documents migration should be either avoided or you have to deploy advanced ODBC data connection in DTW and base it on SQL View

4. Second opinion in Custom Crystal Reports.  The first place to look at is CR data selection.  Is it built in CR data connection wizard or it is based on SQL View or Stored Procedure? Wizard is great tool to begin your Crystal Reports learning curve but it is also famous to expose your learning curve to buggy reports with row duplications and incorrect summaries
