So what exactly is peer pressure, in simple words it is feeling pushed to be like others. It plays a significant role in shaping your personality. The need to be respected by others and fit in can change the way individuals normally behave. At times it is hard to resist peer pressure. People in groups tend to behave totally different and do things they would have never even thought of doing on their own.
As we know each coin has two sides, peer pressure is no exception to that. It can have a negative as well as a positive impact. In fact the impact also varies at different stages of life.
We will start with childhood as it is the first phase in anybody’s life. A toddler is not aware of any bias present in the world but still is no exception to peer pressure. When he sees his fellow mates playing with some particular toy or playing in a particular manner, he tends to imitate. This may include something like jumping on the beds or running in the house. So we can witness the presence of peer pressure from the very start.
Second and most important stage is school. As one get older, we find him spending less time around his parents, and more time around people of their own age. In a way it’s a good thing as adolescence might be difficult and you need reliable friends around you. But what, when you are pushed by your friends to do some jerky stuff you’re not comfortable with?
Kids are immature there and a need to fit in is the priority. They could do anything of it in and look the coolest among their peers. In school a kid scoring high is considered to be a nerd and a “not so cool” tag is embedded on him. So children refrain from studying and scoring well. And they are on cloud nine when they are being praised by their peers for scoring low, not doing their homework and termed as cool. As we all know grades are a prerequisite to have as successful school as well as after school life. School would prove beneficial only if it brings some learning. Though grades aren’t a perfect tool but are the only way to measure the student’s performance. There are other bigger
issues also like skipping school, using drugs, bunkinsessay writting classes or smoking cigarettes with which middle school and high school students have to deal.
The third stage consists of the college life. The scenario there is entirely different from the school. In college there is peer pressure to perform well so that u have a recognition, I would like to narrate an example of one of my classmate, it would show you how peer pressure can have an adverse effect on your grades. Like most of the pg college, even our college follows the criterion of relative grading. During the final exam of xyz subject, everybody was cheating. My friend knew most of the paper, but inside she knew that it’s relative grading, and because of her peers she would end up getting a ‘D’ or an ‘F’. She got caught and finally ended up with an enormous fine and a 0 in the exam. What could have been worse than this?
The demeanour affected by peer issues becomes even more risky as children grow older.
It’s not that peer pressure just have a negative side. It offers a positive facets too like instilling the feeling of competition, the urge to do better, come up with something new but then special attention is required to control its level. Parents can pay the most crucial role by keeping a careful watch on their kids, their changing attitudes especially the ones going against the value system of the family, explaining them the adverse impact of the wrong track and ways in which they can cope up with the stress.
