Living in a college dorm can be a life-changing adventure for anyone who tries it. Living in a dorm during your college years can help any student really grow and transform as a person. For many people,
living in a college dorm will be one of the first situations they have ever had to live with anybody other than family members. This can be a huge challenge for some people and how you deal with is normally a good indicator of how you will manage challenges that you will face in your adult life.
Acclimating yourself with living in an intimate setting with people that are strangers to you can be very intimidating. Nearly all people will have never met their roommates before they move in together. Now they will have to share a minimal space with usually two or more people. They also have to share a bathroom. Sometimes the entire floor of the dorm has to share one bathroom with numerous showers.
While this may feel like a potentially traumatizing experience, it can have a wonderful effect. You will learn how to compromise and be kind to people who are completely different from yourself. You will be able to make new friends and form closer bonds than you ever could imagine. You will have to learn how to take turns with details such as picking what channel the television is on. You and your roommates may not agree on bedtimes or what time to wake up in the morning. You will either have to become accustomed to their alarm clock going off early or get used to getting ready for the day quietly if you are the early bird.
Sometimes you may get in a roommate situation with someone who isn't as clean as you'd like. This is never fun but getting used to another person's annoying habits will prepare you for your career someday. You will learn how to compromise and negotiate with another person. You need to know how to ask for the things you want and need, and be willing to give the other person space sometimes if that is what they require.
You will also need to learn to do your laundry and prepare meals for yourself. This can be a big change for some people. Despite the fact that college dorm life is challenging, you will miss it when you graduate. You will miss living with your friends.
