The excess fee that the private engineering colleges are charging has forced many students to surrender the seats they have secured.
Most of them have informed the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) that they are not financially sound to the pay the fee demanded by the college managements. According to KEA officials, 16 candidates surrendered their engineering seats.
“It is really bad, but KEA has no power to take actions against such colleges. I have details of students who have surrendered seats just because of excess fee,” said KEA executive director V Rashmi.
Tuesday was the last day for candidates to report to the colleges where they have been allotted seats. Most students paid the fee demanded by the colleges.

“We have no choice but to pay the fee demanded by the colleges because if we lose the seat, we need to wait for one more year. Who knows what would be the fee these colleges would be demanding then,” said Kokila (name changed), who got admission at RV College of Engineering.

The committee headed by P Venkataramaiah which oversees admissions at professional colleges also received complaints. Venkataramaiah said: “We received some complaints. The demand by colleges is unreasonable; they must act according the consensual agreement signed by them.”
