Planning Before you Arrive

As a prospective International student you can optimise your study abroad experience through careful planning and by carrying out sufficient research before arriving. Ultimately, planning will ensure that you are well informed to make the best choices when selecting a Higher Education Institution and programme to suit your study abroad requirements and advance your skills.

Fixing Goals

In general, students who do not have clear aims for their study abroad experience will not benefit as much as those who do, in terms of their professional development. These aims may range from; gaining an influential, professional qualification, deepening knowledge of European culture and business, to diversifying professional skills by working and communicating better with people from a variety of backgrounds.

Programme of Study, Academic Institution and Locality

It is a good idea to study your chosen subject in a destination where there are likely to be industry links and opportunities so that you have the added advantage of being in close proximity to leading professional bodies, organisations and research resources. London is a prime example of a suitable location in which to study business, finance or computing as it is a vital European and Global centre for all Service Industries in the UK.

For increased career prospects and recognition from employers, it is recommended that a study abroad experience provides learners with a cultural exchange experience through internships and social opportunities in addition to an Internationally accepted qualification lasting no less than a year. In this case,  you could select a college which offers a three to four year study program towards a British undergraduate degree in Higher Education, or a one year postgraduate degree such as an MBA, MSc or MA.

However, some colleges may not be able to provide work experience opportunities for International students so it is important to enquire when selecting an appropriate institution or course.

Finance

The costs of study abroad will vary with location, and therefore having a clear financial plan beforehand is essential. As a rule, applications for funding such as bursaries or scholarships will not be accepted by most host countries if the student has already arrived at their study location.
