College dorm life offers an experience like no other. The student is on their own for the first time without the rules and regulations of their parents. Many college dorms have very little rooms. Some may have rules about underage drinking and how it is frowned upon. There may be some rules regarding guest stays between the roommates or it may be just the agreements made regarding friends,
significant others, and unexpected overnight visitors.
Settling into the dorm presents you an experience like no other. The rooms are usually tiny; many look like they are just a bit larger than a closet. There are no private restrooms in most of the dorms. There are normally community bathrooms like in most public buildings. There are also shared showers that have privacy curtains or doors. Males and females ordinarily do not stay on the same floor; they may not even live in the same structure.
The dorm building can be a couple of stories high or scores of stories. Typically there are no cooking appliances allowed in the rooms. The college kids may find a microwave if they are fortunate. There are separate buildings that provide prepared food on a prepaid meal plan. Usually these buildings are fewer than a five minute walk and they open early for breakfast and stay open late for treats.
A dorm room is usually shared between two to three people. There is not a lot of space in the room, but each student can have their own desk and bed but that is really about it. The other items they have to figure out how to share and if they are really needed. Living in the dorms is a great way to make friends especially during the first year of going off to college. Roommates can become fast friends, however in some cases they can also become enemies.
When staying together the students have to figure out how to get along with each other. It is also simple to make friends with people in the same building or on the same floor. At night a number of students will leave their door open when they are in their room. This means they are not really doing anything significant and it is okay if someone stops in to talk. When the doors are closed that usually means they are not there or do not want to be bothered. Staying in the dorms offers young people a chance to experience the world on their own and meet new companions away from home.
