However, there are times when the balance between good and bad information tips, and we inadvertently become the victims, and subsequently, the propagators of misinformation. This is a tale of one such incident where I fell for a deadly virus hoax.
In my role as an e-zine publisher, I am always on the lookout for information that could benefit my readers. However, I recently fell victim to a malicious virus hoax. The hoax was sent to me by a seemingly credible source, and without second thoughts, I forwarded it to my subscriber list.
These hoaxes serve no purpose other than to create confusion and worry. They perpetuate themselves through emails that unsuspecting readers reply to, causing a chain reaction of emails bouncing from one inbox to another, creating a digital version of the "Hippy Hippy Shake".
The extent of the bounced emails and any potential damage caused remains unknown, but it certainly stirred up a storm. I received a few comments criticizing my action, which, in hindsight, were well-deserved.
