Aerosmith, one of the most iconic rock bands globally, was formed in Sunapee, New Hampshire, USA, in 1970. The band was born when vocalist Steven Tyler met guitarist Joe Perry. They were soon joined by bassist Tom Hamilton, guitarist Brad Whitford, and drummer Joey Kramer. The band relocated to Boston, where they launched their illustrious career spanning over three decades.
After their first tour through the Northeast, Aerosmith signed with Columbia Records. Their self-titled debut album, released in late 1973, featured the power ballad "Dream On." Initially peaking at #59, the single eventually climbed into the top 10 of the U.S. music charts three years later.
Their second studio album, "Get Your Wings," released in 1974, spent 18 months on the Pop chart. The following year, Aerosmith's breakthrough album, "Toys in the Attic," reached #11 on the U.S. Pop Albums chart, selling 6 million copies worldwide. The album spawned the hit singles "Sweet Emotion" and "Walk This Way."
In 1976, "Rocks" was an instant platinum hit in the U.S., reaching #3 on the Pop Albums chart. The singles "Last Child" and "Back in the Saddle" both made it into the Top 40. The follow-up album, "Draw the Line," peaked at #11 on the U.S. Albums chart and produced the singles "Draw the Line" and "Kings and Queens."
By the end of their 1978 nationwide tour, Aerosmith appeared in the movie "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," covering "Come Together," which peaked at #23 on the U.S. Pop chart. However, internal conflicts and drug use began to take their toll. Joe Perry left the band, followed by Brad Whitford in early 1980. Steven Tyler, Hamilton, and Kramer continued with new guitarists Jimmy Crespo and Rick Dufay.
In 1984, contact was re-established with Perry and Whitford, leading to a period of rehabilitation for the band members. The original lineup recorded "Done with Mirrors," which broke into the top 40 of the Billboard 200 Albums chart. Their career was reignited in 1986 with a collaboration with Run-D.M.C. on "Walk This Way."
In 1987, Aerosmith released "Permanent Vacation," which hit #11 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart, selling over 3 million records. The album featured hits like "Dude (Looks Like a Lady)," "Rag Doll," and "Angel." Their next album, "Pump," released in 1989, was an instant success, reaching the top five of the Billboard 200 chart. It included hits like "Love in an Elevator," "The Other Side," and "Janie's Got a Gun," which won them their first Grammy Award in 1990.
In 1993, Aerosmith released "Get a Grip," which debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart. The album produced hits like "Cryin'," "Livin' on the Edge," and "Crazy," earning them Grammy Awards in 1993 and 1994. The mid-'90s saw the release of the double-platinum collection "Big Ones," featuring new singles "Deuces Are Wild" and "Blind Man."
In 1997, Aerosmith released "Nine Lives," which quickly jumped to #1 on the Billboard 200 chart. The album featured hits like "Falling in Love (Is Hard on the Knees)" and "Pink," which won them their fourth Grammy Award. In 2001, they released "Just Push Play," which included the hit single "Jaded."
In 2004, Aerosmith released the blues-oriented album "Honkin' on Bobo," which reached #5 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart. The band is now back with a new greatest hits compilation, featuring newly recorded tracks "Sedona Sunrise" and "Devil's Got a New Disguise."
