NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea’s Agora Gallery is set to showcase the original works of Vienna-based artist Bekir Smolski in the exhibition "Landscapes of the Mind." The event will run from December 3, 2016, to December 23, 2016, with an opening reception on Thursday, December 8, from 6-8 PM.
Bekir Smolski, a master of oil on canvas, crafts environments that seamlessly blend fantasy and reality. His landscapes are bathed in gentle light, creating serene and glowing images. Smolski’s meticulous brushwork captures the stillness of trees, sand, and ice, freezing them in time. The interplay of weather and light is evident in each piece, leaving textured details on the smoothly painted natural features.
Smolski’s work often takes a surreal turn. In some pieces, stone and wooden structures curve impossibly across the canvas, glowing at their tips. The faceted earth and flora slope through each canvas, working within contained color palettes to create atmospheric scenes. The subjects are emphasized against the subtle natural colors and luminous glow that dominate each piece. In some works, figures are integrated into the rain or mist, while in others, trees stand dark and animated against the subtly dramatic scenes.
Living and working in Vienna, Smolski incorporates his fascination with the ever-changing quality of light into his landscapes. Each smooth transition in the paint draws the viewer further into the experience, inviting exploration. Smolski recently participated in the X Florence Biennale in 2015, showcasing his unique artistic vision on an international stage.
