The Essence of Friedman's Art

Sheree Friedman, an artist with a rich background in fine arts and architecture from Pratt Institute, creates mesmerizing mixed-media collages. Her works often feature architectural elements of greenhouses intertwined with floating orchids, figures, seed pods, and light orbs, all adrift in what she describes as "A Sea of Memories."

Friedman’s process involves creating prints from her collages, which are composed of original drawings, found images, zine clippings, acetate, old photos, architectural plans, dried plants, sand, and other materials. These prints are then enhanced with layers of oil, acrylic, and additional collaging. The final high-definition print is resin-coated and sandwiched between matte plexiglass, enhancing the underwater and reflective qualities of the work.

The Spiritual and Meditative Aspects

Friedman's work ranges from figurative to abstract, often infused with soft purples and subtle light. Her experience with meditation and energy healing manifests in her art as "warm waves" that release stress and worldly concerns. She views the act of creating and observing art as a form of meditative absorption, leading to true understanding. "When I work, either as a channel for assisting others with their healing or creating artworks, I connect with my own inner divinity and light," Friedman explains. "This enables me to best sense, witness, and connect with core energies in all things."

About the Exhibition:

"Spatial Fluidity" is a collective exhibition at Agora Gallery that brings together some of the most innovative artists working outside the traditional picture plane. This exhibition celebrates three-dimensionality in all its forms, questioning how a piece of art should exist in the world. Is it purely a visual entity? Does it enter the viewer's space? Is it static, or does it change as the viewer moves?

The exhibition features a wide range of mixed-media work, from subtly textured pieces to canvases that forcefully protrude and recede into "real" space. There are collages that intermingle newspaper clippings and photographs, or defy expectations by coating everything in a reflective glaze. Single-media paintings emphasize the physical aspects of their material, such as the plastic quality of acrylic. Much of the art is abstract, allowing viewers to focus on broader visual sensations rather than constructing a representational narrative.
