NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea’s Agora Gallery is set to showcase the original works of Johanna Wray in the exhibition "Unbound Perspectives." The event kicks off on June 10, 2017, and runs through June 30, 2017, with an opening reception on Thursday, June 15, from 6-8 pm.
Johanna Wray's landscape paintings are a harmonious blend of serenity and bold color, capturing moments from her travels and life experiences. These compositions exude a compelling tranquility that invites viewers into Wray's world. Her unique technique involves prepping her canvases with a vibrant red-orange ground layer, which adds depth and animation to her work. This base layer often peeks through the paint, adding an intriguing dimension to her pieces. With nearly 25 years of professional experience, Wray is proficient in various mediums and styles but is particularly drawn to the vivid colors in her landscapes. Besides landscapes, she also explores collage, focusing on pop culture and the dynamics of movement and dance. Currently, Wray is working on a series of "Selfie-Portraits," showcasing interesting compositions created by cell phone users.
Born in the Netherlands, Johanna Wray moved to Alberta at a young age and later studied art at the University of Calgary. She currently resides in Canada, where she works as an art educator. Her diverse artistic journey has seen her mastering various mediums, but her landscapes remain a testament to her love for vivid colors and serene compositions.
"Unbound Perspectives" is a group exhibition that spans new painting, photography, drawing, and even wood. The show juxtaposes Japanese experiments with abstract textures in ink against Mexican hyperrealistic oil portraits of real-life figures. It features fantastical manipulations of the female body in wood from Armenia and Indian contemplations of the infinite in acrylic. The diverse range of artworks challenges viewers to discern commonalities and differences, offering a comprehensive survey of contemporary art.
Johanna Wray's participation in "Unbound Perspectives" at Agora Gallery offers a unique opportunity to experience her vibrant yet tranquil landscapes. Her work, alongside other diverse and compelling pieces, provides a rich tapestry of contemporary art that is both far-reaching and discerning. This exhibition is a must-see for anyone interested in the current state of contemporary art.
