Formed in 2010, The Barbiturates, a four-piece band from Derry, Northern Ireland, have carved out a unique niche in the music world. Their sound effortlessly oscillates between the raw energy of The Cramps and the ethereal vibes of Pink Floyd, creating a genre-defying experience.
The Barbiturates, hailing from Derry, Northern Ireland, were formed in 2010 by producer Geoffrey Herbert Flynn. The band, often associated with the colors red and black symbolizing anarchy and truth, consists of four members: Martin Allen (Monkey Boi), Connor McClean (Guru Hans), Patrick Walker (Patricia), and Geoffrey Herbert Flynn (The Grateful Mistake). Their eclectic sound spans punk, melodic, heavy, folky, glitchy, psychedelic grunge, rock, glam, and blues.
The seeds of The Barbiturates were sown in the summer of 2009 when Geoffrey Herbert Flynn began discussing the idea of forming a band focused on truth through music and lyrics. By winter 2009, rhythm guitarist Patrick Walker joined him, and the duo began jamming regularly. The band expanded when Flynn met lead guitarist Connor McClean at The Nerve Centre, a renowned arts center in Derry. Their shared musical tastes and ideals solidified their bond, and McClean joined the group.
In January 2010, drummer Martin Allen, originally from Ashbourne, England, completed the lineup. Allen moved to Derry from Cardiff after meeting his Irish girlfriend and connected with Flynn and Walker through their mutual love of music and cannabis.
The Barbiturates are a self-managed band, recording and producing their music in their studio headquarters in Derry. They describe themselves as a "hard-working, truth-talking, music-making machine on a mission to turn music and the arts on its head and create a new standard of self-made music, riddled with truth, love, and anger."
The Barbiturates have been added to the database of musicians for Derry's City of Culture 2013 event. They continue to work tirelessly on their music and organize gigs, keeping their fans updated via Facebook and Twitter. Their motto, "MAKE WAR ON LOVE (We're all born dead)," encapsulates their rebellious spirit and commitment to truth in music.
The Barbiturates are more than just a band; they are a movement dedicated to truth, love, and musical innovation. Their genre-defying sound and DIY ethos set them apart in the music industry, making them a band to watch in the coming years. Keep an eye on their upcoming projects and live performances, as they continue to push the boundaries of what music can be.
