It is important that you hold your baby in a position that is comfortable for you to hold for long, and comfortable for your baby to be in it for long.

Given below are some ideal positions for breastfeeding a baby:

The Cradle Hold
This is one of the most frequently found breastfeeding position. This is because it is one of the most convenient ones. It enables the mom to keep the baby close to her as well as support their body. This is particularly useful when the child is a newborn and cannot hold himself up in any way. You can also make use of a nursing pillow to prop up your baby in your lap.

Cross-cradle hold
This is a breastfeeding position which helps moms keep their baby closer to them and manage their breasts as well. It is very useful for mothers who are learning to nurse. The baby is more or less in the same position as in the cradle hold, but in this position, you are able to use your hands effectively to steer the baby’s head, while your other hand is free to manoeuvre your breast. Your forearm is also free in this position to support the baby’s body.

Football hold
The football hold is very useful if mothers need to see their breast which is used for feeding. It is particularly convenient for mothers who have a large breast as well as those who do not like their baby vomiting on their stomach. This is particularly useful for women who have had a C-section.

In this position, you need to make sure your baby is supported well by a pillow. If your baby is unable to fit into the space between you and where you sit, you can create space by bending the infant’s leg upwards, so that his bottom is against the chair or bed’s back.

Side lying position
In this position, your child is made to sit on one side while he suckles milk. This is particularly useful for women who have had a C-section or those who want to rest with their baby.

Saddle hold
This one is for babies who have learned to sit up. It is a simple method of allowing your baby to sit up on your lab while he breastfeeds. It is useful for babies who have a runny nose or sore ear.

Try one of these breastfeeding positions according to your convenience.
