You don’t necessarily need to upgrade or downgrade immediately. Just relax and take a quick overview of your situation.  Start by going through your items and decide which ones you probably won’t ever use again. Do this for both your personal apartment home and your self storage unit.

When you start at your home, make piles for items you will discard, donate, and those that you will store.

After you have finished with the above process you will know how many items will be headed for your storage unit. And if you have extra space in the unit, you will be a step ahead of the game.

And if you have not yet rented from a storage facility, now is the time to figure out what you can afford, and what storage company in your area you can rent from.

After you have discerned how much stuff you have, you might have enough space to store everything in your apartment home.  You might even be able to cancel your storage unit. (if you have one). Many apartment homes have extra storage outside on the balcony.

Talk with the storage company to find out what unit best meets your needs. There are some alternate kinds of storage called portable storage units. They will deliver a pod to your front door and will pick it up after  you have loaded all your stuff.
