With Christmas fast approaching, an assortment of cards will soon be arriving by mail. With the coming new year, a new calendar will be needed. Old greeting cards and calendars can be recycled in a number of cute and clever ways. Instead of discarding these items, recycle them into postcards, envelopes and gift boxes.
Postcards
Cute postcards can be made from old greeting cards. Just cut the fronts to the size required for mailing. On the reverse, draw a line vertically down the centre. Write a message to the left of the line and the address to the right. Heavyweight cards are best. Avoid cards that are thin or flimsy.
Envelopes
Use calendar pages to make beautiful envelopes. Carefully take apart an existing envelope in the size desired and use to make a template from cardstock or heavy paper. Trace around the template on the back of the calendar pages. Cut, fold and glue. Use white self-adhesive labels to ensure that the address is readable.
Gift Boxes
Turn greeting cards into gift boxes. Cut apart at the fold. Turn the front over. Draw an X from corner to corner. Draw a line down each side 2.5cm from edge and cut on these lines from the ends to where the side lines intersect the X lines.
Fold the sides up on the lines and the ends up at the depth of the cut. Fold the ends of each side in. Fold the end flaps over these pieces and glue or tape to secure. Repeat process with card back for box bottom.
