Tips for fostering creativity in children

Parents want children to excel in every aspect of life. Hence, you keep an eye on everything they do and get overprotective. This leaves little room for them to express themselves freely. This is where creativity helps them. It acts as the means to bring out their inner emotions and imagination. That does not mean they must be good at it.

Contrary to popular belief, creativity is not an inborn talent. It is a skill that requires exploration and practice. Hence, you can foster creative thinking in children. There are numerous ways to do that. Start by acknowledging their age, growth stage, interests, and likes. This way, you target the right pathway for them. Some learn by drawing on the whiteboard for kids, while others explore by playing. Here are some tips to help you in deciding what works:

Create an open environment: Kids are smarter than we give them credit for. They are keen observers and understand even the minute things. Hence, it is essential to treat them accordingly. Protecting them from sensitive topics is a good thing. But do not let it get in the way of involving them. Talk to them openly about your likes, aspirations, hobbies, experiences, etc. Similarly, make them feel heard.

Provide various opportunities:When we think of creativity, artand crafts pop to mind. But there are multiple ways to explore imagination. Toys like dolls, tents, building blocks, a kitchen set, etc., are a great way of fostering inventiveness. Such ideas come in handy in their school years, day-to-day activities, etc. Creativity spreads to a broad spectrum. Hence, it is important to let kids explore it in multiple ways.

Put them in different situations where they need to come up with creative solutions. Some examples include decision making, problem-solving, communication, critical thinking, etc. These life skills are practical at the later stage of life.

Encourage discussion:Ask children about their interests. No matter what it is, support them. Your little nudge may create a massive impact on their lives. Do not miss out on that. Other than their academics, talk to them about their likings. Plan out professional classes or little activities to gauge their potential in the field. For instance, if they like to draw, start by introducing a blackboard for kids. Let them practice and see how it works out for them.

Avoid rewarding:Creativity is an open process. It should come naturally without any motive behind it. If morphed by a goal or a result, it loses its essence. Therefore, avoid giving incentives to kids when they do something creatively. It leads to competition and creates a sense of urgency. It does not mean you cannot appreciate their efforts. You can encourage them by appraising their work and expressing your pride.
