Nigeria gained her independence in October 1st, 1960 after several years of colonization by England. The first people to explore the land were the likes of Mongo Park, Richard Lemon Lander, and John Lander in 1830-31. The British missionaries also paid a visit and then an influx of the English people ensued after they noticed the vast resources available in the country.
The people of England stormed into the country in 1830 and gained control of Calabar after several treaties with the village chiefs, then later moved over to Lagos and then to the northern part of Nigeria. The country gained independence on the 1st of October 1960 and has since commenced its own long walk to self actualization and development.
The 2011 General election that made president Goodluck Jonathan - the first president from the South-south zone - has been rumored to lack due process and clarity by opposition parties but the majority of Nigeria thinks it is the best we have seen in a long time and only hope and pray for improvement.

There are three basic religions that are still being practiced in Nigeria. The first is the Islamic Religion, the Islamic religion is believed to have existed in Nigeria as early as the eleventh century, it was the first religion that was introduced in Nigeria. It is believed that traders from Mali introduced Islam to the northern part of the country before it was spread to the middle-belt and the western part of Nigeria in subsequent years.
Christianity is the most popular and most advertised religion in Nigeria. The people of England did not only colonize Nigeria, they also brought over their lifestyles and religions. The British missionary introduced Christianity in Nigeria in the early nineties and it has spanned all over the country.
As at this moment it is believed that there are over 1illion churches in Nigeria.
The traditional religion is the third but almost extinct religion in Nigeria. Seems like most of its members are now embracing modern religions and learning to eat their chickens instead of sacrificing them to some gods (amadioha, Ikuku and the rest of them).

Nigeria is still one of the developing countries of the world, despite having the third fastest growing economy in the world we the people of Nigeria believe that we are still very far from our own promise land. Our major problem in Nigeria is good leadership.
We need a government that would put the interest of the people first before their often numerous off-shore accounts. Nigeria just celebrated her fifty-one years anniversary and have not been able yet to deliver at least 12 hour of electricity to its citizen in a 24 hour stretch, that is how far we still are from civilization. We can only hope for a better tomorrow.
