Breast Augmentation and the Use of Anesthesia
This article talks about breast augmentation and its risks and complications. It also focuses on the use of anesthesia during the procedure.
Breast augmentation is a common plastic surgery procedure wherein the individual,
usually a woman, strives to improve the appearance of her chest. The most common way to do this is to insert implants in the chest at specific sites that can help the improvement. A surgeon who is qualified and duly certified by the state is the one who should perform this. It is important to have one who is recognized as able to perform these surgeries because these medical professionals have undergone the right training and education.
The Operation
Breast augmentation requires incisions on the upper half of the human body. Strategic places for these incisions range from specific places in the armpits, the navel and the breasts themselves. There are several choices for implants. The most common are saline or silicone filled sacs. Other substances may be used to fill them such as soy, but these are not as popular. The placement of the sac in the chest is also essential because there are two choices and pros and cons for both. Under the muscle, is not as pronounced as on top of it but under the muscle is not as prone to scarring inside. Either of the two places can also hamper the detection of tumors or masses in the area since there may be some difficulty with the substance blocking the mammograms view. Surgeons often request their patients to come back for regular checkups once they have had breast augmentation. Silicone ones should also be checked after ten years and many doctors propose that these be changed. These may deflate but remain unnoticed for several month because the rate of deflation can be very slow, on the other hand, saline filled implants are safer in the sense that saline is a naturally occurring substance in our body. It usually deflates or ruptures faster than silicone and the women can easily notice it after just a few days.
Anesthesiologist
In relation to having the right people to do the job, an anesthesiologist is also someone who should be present during the operation. The role of this medical professional is to manage and control the application of the anesthesia in order to keep the patient safe. This drug is used to numb the patient in such a way that it may actually induce sleep. In other cases, not breast augmentation operations, the anesthetic is very mild and the person is just numb in the area. The surgeon who does the plastic surgery usually recommends an anesthesiologist to whom he has gotten used to or is familiar working with. This helps build understanding between them making their working together more harmonious.
Basically, the use of an anesthetic is required for major surgery. It is important that the surgeon and the patient be aware of the need for this. In some cases, the anesthesiologist actually sits with both the surgeon for the breast augmentation and the patient to talk about what he would be doing during the operation and what he will do in case of emergency and other possible complications.
