Care for your hair - Make sure you look after your locks in the sun

Your hair can benefit just as much from the application of SPF as your skin does. Although many people apply an SPF containing shampoo or conditioner in the shower by the time this is rinsed out a lot of the protection simply goes down the plug hole! Using a leave in conditioner is a far more effective way to combat those harmful UV rays whilst also helping to prevent your hair from drying out.

Half the battle of defending your hair from the sun actually takes place when you are not out in the heat! Here are some useful tips to remember:

1. If you are using some form of UV protection in your hair you should also use a clarifying shampoo once a week. This prevents excessive SPF build up in you locks
2. Make sure you apply a generous helping of SPF on your scalp area, near your hair parting. This area is particularly sensitive to the sun and can easily burn and peel as a result of over exposure.
3. To retain moisture in your hair a deep conditioner should be applied weekly. This will replenish your hair’s levels of protein and keratin.
4. Products that contain high levels of alcohol and peroxide should be avoided during the summer months. These will cause your hair to dry out further and will also speed up the drying out process caused by the sun.

One final piece of useful advice to remember when you are about to head to the beach or the pool is to rinse your hair with fresh water first. This combats the damaging effects of salt water and chlorine as when you come to dive in your hair has already absorbed lots of fresh water meaning that it won’t soak up as much of the not so pure stuff!
