Step 1 – Compare Price And Value

In general, it’s best to avoid shops that offer maintenance packages at lower prices. The service center will still be making a profit on this price, so it’s likely that in some cases you may be shortchanged on other aspects regarding the quality of the service provided.

The replacement fluids may not be the best, inspections may be minimal, or you may even be paying for the expertise of an inexperienced mechanic to handle the job. While not all shops fall into this category, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on the places which offer these services at a price that can’t be beat. More often than not, you’ll get what you pay for.

Step 2 – Department Stores

Did you purchase your vehicle at a department store? No. Then why would you trust them with your maintenance? Most of these oil change facilities are generally supported by other departments of the establishment, thus providing little to no incentive to provide the best workmanship possible. Once again, this is only a general rule of thumb.

Step 3 – Franchises

Safe to say that many of these establishments are usually quite reputable. If they did not have a track record for quality work, then they probably wouldn’t be where they are today. These shops take time to inspect each part of the cooling and lubrication system, top off any of your brake, transmission and power steering fluids, and generally take care of a battery check as well. However, this will usually only apply to the higher grade maintenance packages. A simple oil change will typically not allow the mechanics to address any additional issues you may be having.

Step 4 – Car Dealers

If you happen to have a new vehicle that is still under warranty, the best place for your maintenance is your dealer. The work provided with be in strict accordance with your warranty package, and you may even receive a free car wash out of the deal.

While you will still likely be paying for the oil change itself, the mechanics on site will be able to properly evaluate your vehicle’s condition and make recommendations that will work to benefit the life and performance of your car or truck. Avoid the sales pitches and services that you can likely do without. The downside to the car dealer is having to sort through the barrage of services offered and figure out what you actually need to keep your vehicle running.
