For many women,
it can be a hard choice to make selecting your doctor. OB GYN professionals, after all, are the type that you want to select wisely since this is the person who will be seeing you through the long nine months of pregnancy and the eventual, hopefully uneventful birth of your baby.
You want to ensure whoever you select will be available for you when you are ready to give birth and not on a planned vacation that falls on your due date, leaving you with a stand in that you never met. This is not the kind of surprise you need when you make that frantic, “my water broke” phone call to your OB GYN at three in the morning, only to discover that there is no availability of your doctor. OB GYN professionals can be asked on the first visit if there is any scheduled conflict with your due date, remember that you could go into labor two weeks early or late on either side of that date.
So as you are shopping for an OB GYN be prepared with a list of questions to ask, including if they are comfortable with your birth plan and support it. If you and your partner have a prepared birth plan on how you would like the birth to go you should talk to them about your expectations early on. Some women want everyone in their large extended family around them in the birthing room including their Great-Uncle Charlie and some women only want their birthing coaching. If your potential physician does not want to work in the conditions you want for your birth you should either be prepared to comprise, change your plans if it is a matter of the health and safety of baby or find someone who is comfortable with what you want your baby’s birth to look like.
You should also talk about your doctor’s skill level if something does wrong. Most women today with the proper medical care, don’t die in childbirth from complications that can be medically attended to but there is always the remote chance you could experience unforeseen complications or the baby could. How long has your ob be in practice? How skilled are they at difficult births?
And of course you should also ensure that you select an ob that you are comfortable with. Nine months of morning sickness, bloating, weight gain and hormone surges can take a toll on a woman’s body and you don’t want to add to your stress level by having an ob you are not 100% comfortable confiding your fears, aches and pains to or don’t feel comfortable to call in the middle of night if you have complications.
Once you pick your MD you should feel confident that you have selected a doctor that is going to see you through one of the most joyful times of your life towards a successful new beginning as a new family.
