Hair Extensions – How To Care For Them
Hair extensions require a special level of care to keep them looking beautiful. By treating them right, you will enjoy the look of long hair for a long time after having them applied.
After sitting in that chair for all of that time getting your hair extensions,
you want to ensure that they are well taken care of when you get home. Since these hairs are not your own natural hairs, do they require extra care? What can you do to ensure that they look great long after you have them applied? These tips will help you care for them after you leave the salon, allowing you to keep the luscious look you and your hair dresser have worked so hard to achieve.
The first step in keeping them looking great is to wash your tresses regularly. Dirt, sweat, and styling products that are built up can make more tangles, and tangles are dangerous to these additional hairs.
Conditioning your hair extensions is important to keep them looking great. The ends may be more prone to splitting than the ends of your natural hairs, so you will need to condition the ends especially carefully. Condition as regularly if not more regularly than you did your natural tresses to keep them looking good.
You also need to prevent too much tangling if at all possible. The long hairs will tangle easily, but brushing out those tangles can damage them or cause them to loosen from your head. After you wash and condition your hair, comb or brush it out gently. Brush from the bottom to the top to avoid putting too much pressure on the adhesion between your natural hairs and the others. Then, consider sleeping in a loose ponytail to keep it from getting tangled while you sleep. However, avoid tight ponytails or other styles that pull on your tresses too tightly. Hair extensions put a lot of pressure and weight on your natural hairs, and tight styles can damage your roots.
Avoid going to bed with a wet head. This can create tangles and other problems with your extended length. Do not use silicone-based products on your head while you have hair extensions. These can loosen them and cause them to slip off of your head. You spent good money and time getting them put on; so do not do things that will cause them to just slip off.
You can style your new hairs as you normally would. However, you do want to be cautious on the use of heat. Whenever possible, allow your hairs to dry naturally, and use a curling iron minimally to create the style you want. If possible, use a style that allows you to leave a leave-in conditioner on afterwards, and avoid products that contain alcohol, which is too drying for these new hairs. If you need to perm or color these hairs, only do so through your salon. At-home products are too damaging.
Remember, hair extensions are not your natural hairs, so they need to be treated just a little bit more cautiously than you would your natural curls. With the right care, they can be gorgeous long after your appointment at the salon.
