If you want to lose excess pounds, you need to do more than just diet. You need to commit yourself to a whole new, healthy way of life, and you need to put time in. If you’re serious about losing weight, here are some realistic tips for getting started.
Medical Advice
Your doctor could be your best bet if you’re serious about losing weight. He or she will help you to understand the options with regard to exercise and nutrition, what will be safe for you given your health and current weight, and so on. You may have issues with regard to medications or health issues which your doctor should monitor. If you are going to lose weight, consulting your doctor is playing it safe.
Be Positive
You have to think positively, and this may take some re-training, if you are going to lose weight and maintain your new weight. Imagine the life you will have with your new weight, and how you’re going to look. Visualize the positive impact on your life, and develop a new, positive outlook on the effort you’re going to have to put in to get there.
What is Your Present State?
Have a look at how you are now, and decide what you will need to both look and feel better. This will determine your goals for the next month, six months or even the next year. Your doctor will advise you as to how much weight you need to lose in order to improve your overall health. You can also set your own goals, such as fitting into a favorite pair of jeans. This will tell you how much weight you want to lose. Don’t, however, aim to lose over twenty pounds a month, because this is not a realistic goal.
Imagine the Life Changes
Losing a significant amount of weight is life changing. Think about how your life is going to change when you succeed in shedding that excess weight. Will you have to buy some new clothes? Will there be any emotional issues which might cause you to benefit from joining a support group? What will the effect of your weight loss be on your relationships with people in your life who are important to you? You need to consider these issues in advance, so that you are prepared for the effects of your weight loss, and don’t meet with any surprises later on.
Set Easy to Reach Goals
If you have a lot of weight to lose, the thought of losing that much may be overwhelming. The best thing is to break the amount you need to lose down into smaller goals, which are more manageable. Start, for example, with planning to lose one pound a week, then go up to five pounds per month, and go from there. Small goals are easier to reach, and you will soon build your confidence with regard to weight loss, and be more able to keep going on the path to good health.
Losing weight isn’t easy, but it’s worthwhile. If you can stay at a healthy weight you will have a lot less health problems, and you will feel a lot better.
