The MAKOplasty Total Hip Arthroplasty is a surgical procedure that uses the assistance of the RIO (Robotic Arm Interactive Orthopedic) system.
It is a robotic arm that takes the patient’s data, creates a unique surgical plan, and assists the surgeon in accomplishing unparalleled precision before and during the procedure. Utilizing the MAKOplasty robotic in such an intricate procedure provides superior patient care by increasing positive outcomes such as quick recovery times, less pain, and small incisions.
When you come to see us about receiving MAKOplasty, your surgeon will be Dr. Charles Toulson or Dr. Brian Snow. Each physician will take their time to go over every aspect of the surgery with you to make sure you are completely comfortable and prepared. They work with their patients to assure that the procedure and post-operative care is met with high standards. Throughout your time with us, they will always be available to you.
What happens during the procedure?
The portion of the hip that is causing trouble will be resurfaced, which therefore will keep the patient’s still healthy bone and tissue intact. Once the hip has been resurfaced, an implant in placed in the hip’s joint to return smooth, comfortable motion.
How does MAKOplasty work?
Before surgery, the RIO system supplies the surgeon with a unique, pre-surgery outline of the procedure needed. During surgery, the ROI system then provides auditory, tactile, and visual feedback in real time, so the procedure follows the outline precisely. This assures that the patient receives precise positioning of implants and joint resurfacing. Not only does this precision make the procedure as accurate as possible and minimally invasive, but this accuracy ensures that hip movement after surgery is natural and comfortable.
How do I know if I am an MAKOplasty candidate?
Common symptoms for individuals that may be candidates include, but are not limited to:
Stiffness or pain in the hips when movement occurs, such as walking or exercising
Increased or sudden pain in the hip when bearing weight on the affected side
Pain that typically starts in the hip and radiates toward the lower back and/or the legs
Using a gait to compensate for the pain in the hip(s)
If these symptoms are not alleviated by non-surgical means, then talk to Alpha Ortho about our Total Hip Arthroplasty with MAKOplasty.
What can I expect after the procedure?
You may be inpatient or outpatient depending on your personalized plan and the condition of your hip before surgery. If you are inpatient, overnight hospital stays are one to three nights on average. Patients are often able to comfortably walk shortly after the procedure and can return to normal activities within a few days. Returning to operating a motor vehicle or heavy machinery can happen after two weeks.
