What happens during the procedure?

The portion of the hip that is causing trouble will be resurfaced, which therefore will keep the patient’s still healthy bone and tissue intact. Once the hip has been resurfaced, an implant in placed in the hip’s joint to return smooth, comfortable motion.

How does MAKOplasty work?

Before surgery, the RIO system supplies the surgeon with a unique, pre-surgery outline of the procedure needed. During surgery, the ROI system then provides auditory, tactile, and visual feedback in real time, so the procedure follows the outline precisely. This assures that the patient receives precise positioning of implants and joint resurfacing. How do I know if I am an MAKOplasty candidate?

Common symptoms for individuals that may be candidates include, but are not limited to:

Stiffness or pain in the hips when movement occurs, such as walking or exercising

Increased or sudden pain in the hip when bearing weight on the affected side

Pain that typically starts in the hip and radiates toward the lower back and/or the legs

Using a gait to compensate for the pain in the hip(s)

What can I expect after the procedure?

You may be inpatient or outpatient depending on your personalized plan and the condition of your hip before surgery. If you are inpatient, overnight hospital stays are one to three nights on average. Patients are often able to comfortably walk shortly after the procedure and can return to normal activities within a few days. Returning to operating a motor vehicle or heavy machinery can happen after two weeks.
