Medicare Patients Watch Out-Hospital Care Is Fatal For Some

It is estimated that approximately 15,000 Medicare patients die each month due to the care that they receive in the hospital. This information comes from a study that is looking at adverse events that take place in hospitals and while the study was centered around Medicare patients they are not the only ones being adversely affected by the medical care that they are receiving in a hospital setting.

The study focused on a group of 780 patients who were released from the hospital and had issues that varied from bed sores and infections to excessive bleeding which was attributed to being given the wrong quantities of blood thinners. In looking at the results of this study it has become evident that the system is still failing patients in a major way and this is of concern to the Inspector General.

Are many Americans being let down by the health care system they have come to depend on for generation to heal, care and cure them? Who among us wants to enter the hallowed health halls at our most vulnerable hour of need, knowing the visit could hasten our demise? It is these situations that we are literally putting our lives in the hands of someone who we are told is very competent and capable of administering care and that we can feel secure.

Many dispute the results of the study sighting that many of the things that are considered medical mistakes are things that are not necessarily a result of poor care but are a result of a mis-communication about allergies and so forth and that Americans need to be aware of these factors that were included in the study as well. Overall, there are many problems that are plaguing our health care system and by far one of the biggest issues is that most of the money within the medical community is going into research as opposed to the actual delivery of care to the patients.

It is important to realize that while this study was conducted on those who have Medicare that everyone who enters the hospital may be at risk and it is extremely important for those who receive care in a hospital setting to ask questions about their care and to alert doctors of any issues that may arise. Don't just assume that the medical professionals know what they are doing, you might be experiencing a medical mistake and questioning your care may just save your life.
