Learn about some of the more common causes of snoring and how they occur. But also learn what the standard snoring remedy is for that cause.
Snoring is one of those issues we rather not talk about. We are embarrassed about it, and we and everyone around us blames us for it. But, snoring is not our fault and is fairly common: Studies show that 45% of men and 30% of women snore on a regular basis. Even people who do not normally snore might start snoring because of a nose congestion, after drinking alcohol, or when taking some medications. It is often caused by health issues, and there is a number of reasons why one person snores. There are also many proposed solutions, some valid and others just a way for someone to make a quick buck. The issue is sufficiently important to give it enough attention. That means starting with your doctor. The doctor will find out the reason why you snore and propose what to do about it.
Obstruction in the nasal passageway
This is one of most common reasons for snoring. It can happen for a variety of reasons, like chronic nasal congestion or a deviated nasal septum (the partition between nostrils). Sometimes a simple decongestant will do the trick. You also might want to try one of the popular nose strips; some people had great results with them.
Obesity
Obesity is one of the major health problems in the modern affluent society. The fat deposits in and around the throat can cause snoring. An obese person often has difficulty breathing normally because of the air that becomes blocked by the excess fat. At night, it will manifest itself by snoring. Snoring is just one of many reasons why an obese person should try to lose weight.
Sleep apnea
Sleep apnea happens when the throat tissues obstruct the airway, preventing a person from breathing. Sometimes the airway becomes so small that the person does not have enough of oxygen to function. It is a serious condition that has to be addressed by a doctor. It happens as a consequence of obesity, or alcohol consumption, or sometimes because of person's mouth or throat anatomy. Sleep apnea can increase risk of a heart attack and stroke. Even kids can suffer from sleep apnea, so if you hear your children snore, consult your pediatrician. Sleep apnea is sometimes treated by breathing devices like mouth pieces, but sometimes the surgery is the only solution.
Enlarged tonsils
Enlarged tonsils will obstruct air passage and cause breathing difficulty during the day and snorting at night. Since their job is to fight infection, they sometimes stay enlarged constantly, making this a permanent problem. Doctors often suggest removing tonsils as a solution.
Weak throat muscles
Weak throat muscles can cause the throat to close during sleep. There are some excellent exercises that can completely eliminate this problem. Look for exercises that address more than one cause of snoring. After all, most of us are not completly sure what causes our snoring, so addressing more than one problem is the ticket.
Addressing snoring as a problem is important not only for health reasons, but for our well-being as well. Snoring often results in a lack of intimacy. Many marriages were put at risk because partners blame snorers for something that was not their fault. Snoring has to be addressed as a family problem. Accepting that there is a problem is the first step in finding the right snoring solution.
