Learn more about Juvéderm® from New Jersey's Dr. Deborah Spey and her team at Advanced Dermatology & Skin Care. Different formulations of the filler are intended to address different areas of the face.
Chances are, your face is unlike almost any other face on Earth, but you might not know that different areas of your face are more primed than others for specific treatments, such as JUVÉDERM® in New Jersey. Different procedures can be used to enhance different aspects of a face, even if the procedures sound similar to each other—at least at first.
While JUVÉDERM® and Voluma® are both part of the same family of hyaluronic acid “facial fillers,” the two serve different functions in restoring a patient’s younger, fuller appearance. While JUVÉDERM® handles several types of facial wrinkles, Voluma® counteracts the effects of lost collagen and lifts cheek sagging. It sits deeper beneath the dermal layer than other types of dermal fillers, lying closer to the bone where it can give a fuller, more uniform effect that is apparent from every angle. Combined with the wrinkle-reducing effects of JUVÉDERM®, Voluma® can provide that additional, harmonious boost to help reclaim the face a patient remembers and reverse some of the natural effects of aging. Increasingly popular, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), these facial fillers such as JUVÉDERM® have steadily grown in popularity, often even more so than the overall rise in cosmetic procedures. For instance, the ASPS reported that, in 2015, JUVÉDERM® treatments increased by 8 percent year-over-year between 2014 and 2015. For JUVÉDERM®, that’s nearly four times as high as the rise of cosmetic procedures, overall.
Patients considering the popular injectables should know that hyaluronic acid, used in treatments like JUVÉDERM® and Voluma®, is a natural substance in the body, often found in soft connective tissues, in cartilage, and in joint fluid, as well as skin. Unfortunately, adult skin naturally loses elasticity and moisture over time. Over the years, this natural progression can result in everything from fine lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth to deeper creases. While men and women can use creams and other topical solutions to moisturize the skin, a treatment like JUVÉDERM® actually gets beneath the skin’s surface to reduce the appearance of wrinkles by adding volume to the area, which “reflates” the area.
Voluma® works in the same way, but has a different effect. Unlike JUVÉDERM® for facial wrinkles, Voluma® can be used to undo the effects of age and gravity and restore a more youthful appearance. Like wrinkles that appear with age, a person's cheeks naturally tend to sag and lose volume with time. There are a variety of factors that lead to cheek sagging, but shrinking fat pads over the cheek bones can make the entire cheek flatten and sag, causing an aged appearance.
A Voluma® injection is performed with a fine needle and typically takes less than an hour to perform, with the most common side effects including tenderness, redness, bruising, and swelling that last a few weeks. The added volume will create an immediate lifting effect, revealing rounder contours and less sagging.
Likewise, a JUVÉDERM® treatment will be focused on areas of the mouth to counteract vertical lip lines, smile lines, marionette lines, and corner lines. A patient's JUVÉDERM® treatment will also be performed in a manner that minimizes pain and discomfort, with mild side effects, such as bruising, that last approximately one week.
These treatments can be performed separately or together, depending on the desired effect.
