It is important to wear safety gears especially a helmet when out riding on your bike. There are three different styles of motorcycle helmet a rider can choose from.
One of the most important safety gears is the helmet. In fact, it is considered by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation as the best protective gear you wear while riding out on your motorcycle. It has been a habit to a lot of motorcycle riders to pick their keys and helmets consequently when going for a ride. Aside from learning how to ride properly and aside from following the rules of the road, wearing a helmet can help protect you from in injuries when met an accident.
However, no matter how common “helmet” may sound to us, there are some people who are not familiar with the different styles of helmets and the things it can do for them. A motorcycle helmet has three basic styles; full-face, three quarter shell and half shell helmets. Each has different purpose and sometimes the kind of bike you ride determines the kind of motorcycle helmet you use.
The full-face motorcycle helmet covers your entire head and most of the face. It shell of the helmet extends from your brow, going down at the base of the skull and going forward to encompass the cheekbones, the jaw and the chin giving it a wrap –around appearance.
The three quarter shell motorcycle helmet is similar to a full-face helmet but it does not cover the entire face. The shell of the helmet covers the head and stop at the base of the ears. The helmet was secured by a strap at the chin.
The half shell motorcycle helmet or sometimes called as beanie helmets covers the top half of the cranium only. This is the kind of helmet that is not heavy, less intrusive, do not block the ears and offer less resistance to the wind. However, this kind of helmet offers less protection to the head and the face.
Looking at the helmet, you can see that it has four basic components. It has an outer shell, impact-absorbing liner, comfort padding and good retention system. The outer shell of helmets is made from fiber-reinforced composites and is designed to compress when it hits a hard surface. The impact-absorbing liner inside the shell of a helmet is made of expanded polystyrene. The purpose of this is to absorb shock.
On the other hand, the comfort padding is a soft foam and cloth layer inside the shell that is designed to make you comfortable. The retention system or sometimes called as the chin strap keeps the helmet on your head. It is very important to secure the helmet will stay on your head when riding.
These are the different styles of a motorcycle helmet and it part. You can choose what kind of helmet to use but remember that on some US states, motorcycle helmets must follow the requirements set by the DOT. Those motorcycle helmets that met the standard of DOT must have a DOT sticker.
Though wearing a helmet does not guarantee a 100 percent safety from motorcycles accidents, but still it will help you get the least injury. It is still very important to wear safety gears especially a helmet every time you ride.
