There are some rules for playing the ninth and the eleventh piano chords which need to be remembered. You can also include the seventh chord while you are playing these chords. Now you can substitute the ninth and the eleventh chords with the seventh chord. So now if you want to play C9 chord then you can play either a C chord or a C7 chord. Both these options will produce the correct result.
