Natural disasters can happen anywhere at any given time. By preparing a natural disaster management scorecard, you can better handle the unwanted effects brought about.
If there is anything in the world that we mere human beings cannot control,
it is the wrath of nature. All sorts of natural disasters – landslides, hurricanes, earthquakes, cyclones, and the like – are things that we can never prevent from happening. However, this does not mean that we cannot do anything about the hazards that are caused by these natural disasters. By preparing a natural disaster management scorecard, this could be efficiently and successfully carried out.
Natural disaster management is all about strategies designed to keep the detrimental effects caused by natural disasters at a minimum. To do this effectively, various scales need to be carried out and with these scales; KPIs need to be implemented so that they can act as pointers when it comes to attaining perfection during the natural crises at hand.
When it comes to natural disaster management, the KPIs to be used here can be categorized in just four perspectives, namely disaster monitoring and funding, natural disaster preparedness, natural disaster risk reduction, and education and training.
For the most part, the KPIs to be used under each perspective would vary from one organization to another, as these KPIs have to be in accordance with organizational goals and objectives. But for discussion’s sake, here are some KPIs that are commonly used for each of the perspectives mentioned above.
KPIs that you can include under disaster monitoring and funding include percentage increase in government funding and the quantity of early warning models produced. As for natural disaster preparedness, you can include percentage increase in relief measures and percentage area and building inspections. When it comes to natural disaster risk reduction, you should include the number of vulnerable areas identified and natural disaster risk maps developed. Education and training, on the other hand, should take into consideration the number of medicinal training programs conducted and the number of training sessions on safety management.
Most of the times, these KPIs are easily used in whatever case there may be. However, there may be times when it becomes a bit difficult to measure these KPIs correctly and when this happens, the task becomes all the more complex as a result. And this is just one of the challenges that you would have to face when developing this type of scorecard. Another challenge pertains to the coordination of the events and activities of different groups and their members. There is a need to keep all of the efforts unified towards the shared task at hand, which is to manage natural disasters effectively. This can be difficult, especially when you start calculating values for your parameters and you start of at the wrong foot. If any of these KPIs are identified incorrectly, then this could be disastrous for the whole endeavor.
With all the KPIs lined up in a strategic natural disaster management scorecard, you then have a more focused approach in determining the areas that are more prone to these natural disasters since these are the areas that need more attention. Furthermore, you would also have a systematic approach in determining the appropriate courses of action to counter the unwanted effects that come with these natural disasters.
