Tips on Garage Door Decoration

When we think about decorating our homes for one reason or another, or enhancing them in some way, we don’t often consider the garage door. When you think about it, however, most of these doors face the street and are quite visible, so making yours look festive during certain seasons, or especially decorative all year round can be a great idea. This is especially true if you like to step outside the box when it comes to your decor. 

Temporary Decor

During holidays such as Christmas, Easter, or the 4th of July, it can be fun to put some temporary decorations on your garage door. Believe it or not, there are decorative murals made just for this, and any type of decor that can be added to your home can usually be added to the garage. Since it’s usually so visible, you shouldn’t forget this area when you’re decorating. Put lights or garland around it at Christmas, or a vinyl fireworks mural for the 4th of July. People will love the festivity of it.

Permanent Decor

Some people like to add permanent decor to that area, such as outdoor plaques or murals depicting certain scenery, or even portraits. If you’re considering decor, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t tap the recesses of your imagination! Custom murals can cost quite a bit, whether they’re pre-made and applied to your garage door or you have them painted on, but they can make a wonderfully decorative statement. Imagine a beach scene or a desert scene, or even a Parisian cafe scene! If you do a search online, you’ll find a surprising amount of companies that furnish pre-made murals for this area, or painters who specialize in this type of work.

Maintaining your decor

For permanent garage door decor, whether it’s a pre-made mural that’s applied or a scenery that is painted on directly, you’ll want to do what you can to keep it looking good for as long as possible. Manufacturers of the pre-made kind will use a type of material that is weather resistant and easy to clean, and those who specialize in direct decorative painting will usually use high quality paints that last as long as good house paint, and then a sealer. Follow manufacturer or painter recommendations on cleaning. 

It’s important to remember that your neighbors will have to look at your garage door decor all the time, so it’s best to be reasonable about what you put there. As long as it’s tasteful, however, you and everyone else should be able to appreciate it for a long time.
