Employing a locksmith to create a safer environment is a wise step for commercial establishments and residences. Nothing deters crime like having a home or business building locked up tight. Today, security is about more than just locks and keys. In olden times, metal locks and metallic keys were the main tried-and-true method for keeping the bad guys in or out. - Electronic keypads: Both homes and businesses are now utilizing electronic keypads to enter buildings. Typically, there is a code number to be pressed in order for the door to swing open. In a day care center, for example, there may be one code for all students and their parents and another code for employees. This allows the system to monitor who is entering and exiting the building and keeps strangers out unless they are buzzed into the premises. Some residential structures have this capability, too. Keypads may be posted on the garage so inhabitants can punch in and enter without the worry of lost house keys. This can be a nice device to have for latchkey children and working parents.

- Alarms and monitoring systems: Another layer of burglar proofing is having an alarm installed which will alert emergency personnel should a break in occur. Windows and doors are typically wired so that if an intruder tries to force his or her way in, alarms will blare and the police will be on their way. Motion detectors may also be set up to sense movement in the building during hours when no one is supposed to be there.

- Re-keying: When someone moves into a new home or office, it is a common practice to have the doors rekeyed. This is a safe way to ensure that no one from the past ownership will have access.

- Lockouts: Who hasn’t locked their keys inside a building or vehicle? Having a reliable locksmith show up to let locked out individuals in can be a huge relief.
