You may find chicken wire behind the bricks and the chicken wire may have dried mortar stuck to it so try and loosen this with the sledge hammer as you are removing the bricks.
Use a wire cutter to cut the chicken wire into square than can easily be pulled off the wall and remove any small bits of mortar that may become lodged in between the wire when the brick cladding was applied. Once the chicken wire has been removed use a small chisel to tap off the mortar that is left on the wall. If the walls are wooden make sure you take care not to chisel away the wood.
