Fundamentals of How Carpet is Made

Most people have a carpet in their home.  However, most don't exactly know how carpet is made.  If you're interested in learning the fundamentals of carpet manufacturing, then keep reading.

There are various ways that companies can make carpet.  Weaving is a time-consuming and complicated process.  That's why carpets which are handwoven carry much higher price tags than other varieties.  However, these are of the highest-quality carpets that you can buy.

Most companies make their carpets with a process known as tufting.  With this process, a needle will be used to put carpet fibers into place on a carpet backing.  The fibers will end up in a loop held in place onto the backing.

This used to be done by hand, but with the advancement of technology, machines have made the process much more efficient and faster.  Larger machines can accommodate hundreds of needles working to make a carpet at one time.  After all of the fibers have been inserted into the backing, the carpet may be finished.

However, there are various ways that the pile of the carpet can end up.  If the carpet will feature cut pile, then the loops will need to be cut using sharp knives.  Some designs feature both cut and uncut pile carpet.

As you already know, carpets come in many different colors.  The process of coloring carpets varies.  Some are placed in large containers of water and boiled while dyes will be mixed in.  Sometimes, the dyes will be rolled or sprayed onto the carpet.

In other cases, the carpet will be colored before it has even been made.  Each individual fiber will be dyed before being placed into the carpet backing.

After the carpet has been completely made, workers will wash it and dry it.  Often times, vacuuming will also be done.  Every carpet that is manufactured doesn't end up perfect.  Some fibers will be out of place and need to be corrected by workers.  They commonly need to trim certain fibers down by hand.  Other areas will need more fibers to be filled in.

Making carpet isn't an extremely complicated process as long as tufting is used.  No matter what type of carpet you get, you should make sure that is a high quality one.  Needless to say, these will last much longer than their lower quality counterparts.  This is especially important if you don't want to keep buying new carpet and installing it every few years.
