Garage Door Parts And Pieces
This article helps to explain garage door parts, pieces and tools which are commonly used to fix or repair them. Some tips about how to go about doing some handyman work on garage doors are also included.
One part of the garage that is constantly in use is the garage door. The constant wear and movement of the mechanism means that the parts of this unit are most likely to need regular maintenance and eventual replacement or repair. There are many different parts that are used in such mechanisms and units. The following are just the ones which may be usually repaired,
replaced or maintained.
Drums, Cables and Pulleys
These are moving pieces of a garage door that have a high tendency of showing wear and tear early on. Drums are used to roll the cables or chains up or down when the entrances are being opened or closed. These may get stuck if debris or some hard pieces like rocks, pebbles and other pieces of metal get stuck on them. These drums are quite sturdy and are the least possible to have wear and tear when used and maintained properly.
Cables have a higher tendency of fraying since they bear the brunt of work when opening and closing entry ways. Pulleys also bear a heavy load and may eventually give way due to stress of this load. These parts are not utilized in just one type of opening, although the cables may be present in many of the different units.
Springs
There are two basic types of spring used for car port entries, namely, extension and torsion springs. These are usually utilized in single door ports and entryways. The two types of springs can bear different workloads. The load will dictate how big and long the spring will be. These may need regular maintenance and checking up since they are always used for opening and closing. They are not as expensive as the drums, cables and pulleys but just as important.
Hinges
Most residences use a garage door that has hinges. These are also load bearing to some degree and are always being used for opening and closing the units. Since they are attached to the house itself, it may be easy to overlook the hinges when doing maintenance work on the car port entries. Some of the hinges may need lubrication as well as cleaning to get rid of dirt and debris which may interfere with its function.
The above mentioned parts are just a few of the basic ones used for carport entryways. It is always a good idea to consult a handyman or a technician when the doors do not function properly especially if the homeowner does not have any idea what to do with it.
