Absolutely everyone needs a set of tools around the house. Even for people who rent or live in condominiums that have a superintendent or a set of repair services on call,
straightforward tools for repairs is still a basic need for repairs that don't need expert attention that may run up repair charges and bills that could have been easily avoided. Having a knowledge of home repair not only helps stop such expenses but also gives a sense of self reliance and satisfaction knowing that as a homeowner there is something to be done for small problems.
One principal of the home tool kit is a decent set of screwdrivers. Most everything in the house will have some set of screws holding the item together, and having a reliable variety of screwdrivers eliminates most of the troubles in a home, or at least makes it easier to identify what needs fixing as most casings have to have screwdrivers to be opened. A Philip's Head screwdriver and a flat head screwdriver are the most commonly used screwdriver to have in the household, but there are other screwdrivers that come in handy as well. Allen Screwdrivers and multi-tool style screwdrivers fit the needs of most homeowners who purchase economy or foreign furniture and it's best to have these types of screwdrivers at hand if the need ever appears.
A good hot glue gun is another tool that has many uses in the house as well. While they may not afford a permanent solution to certain home fix problems, they do give the homeowner the time he or she needs to find a proper solution for fraying upholstery or having certain fixtures be put back to their place. Glue guns are also useful for home arts and crafts and are a good all around tool to have.
The wrench is really the most useful tool though. While this conjures up the image of the bulky and cumbersome red plumber's wrench, visiting a local hardware store shows the extensive selection of wrenches that can fit any family's needs. A good sized stainless steel wrench can be used to fix most loose pipes for sinks, and with an adjustable wrench, most nuts and bolts can be simply seen to. A wrench can also be used as a makeshift group of pliers as well for open surfaces.
All these tools with a hammer and a pair of needle nose pliers should complete a good set of tools for everyone.
