So you need some containers to store your food in and you think that stainless steel is what you need. But you're not 100% sure right? Or perhaps you're like many others and don't care too much about the ins and outs and have just fallen in love with the shiny and classy look of stainless steel - that's fine too! What you should know though, there are many materials that stainless steel food containers come in such a plastic, glass, paper an even rubbermaid containers.
All are fine choices for different reasons but since you are more on the stainless side, what we're going to do here is discuss the advantages and disadvantages of stainless steel containers. Whether it's to store your leftover food, water or the nice warm soup you made, you can pretty much store anything you like in them. This type of steel is a tough and durable material that is much stronger than plastic and will not break like glass can so easily do.
Not only is stainless tough as nails, it'll also not stain, chip or rust easily, meaning it will last you many years of use. That's not to say that stainless steel can not be "stained". Whoever invented stainless steel should be sued because it can very much so be stained, scratched and discolored if you don't have care of them! Other benefits of stainless containers are that they are dishwasher safe in most cases and are also easily recyclable.
Storing your food in these metallic beauties will also not change the quality or taste of your good like some other materials can. Ok so that all sounds great doesn't it? Hold on a second before you go off to buy some, you need to hear the not so good points first! Unfortunately the steel can be expensive especially if you're after the high grade quality containers. That's not to say that they are out of reach, just be prepared to pay more than plastic for examples. Stainless steel is very prone to marks such as fingerprints and if any sticky or greasy food gets stuck to it, be prepared for a little scrubbing.
One thing to consider If storing liquids in them is to make sure they are leak proof. Most containers wont be unless they specify on the packaging. Stainless steel containers come in many shapes and styles. Some are light, some are small and large, some are even heavy duty! Most people opt for the square or rectangular containers however don't be surprised to find circular and cylindrical ones that look more like drums.
All in all stainless steel is a perfectly viable and beautiful looking material which is excellent for food storage. As with everything else there are a few minor quibbles but overall you'll be very happy buying them. Our favorite option is buying them online from a quality dealer website. What you'll find is the prices and range of containers on show far outperform any local shop you would visit.
