How Water Systems Run The City

Water systems provide a clean and usable resource to practically all aspects of human survival within a given metropolitan area. In our daily lives we require waste water processing, drinking, and cooking water purification as well as softeners for our swimming, bathing, as well as for various industries that include food preparation and product processing within that area. Water systems, as defined by the Environmental Protection Agency, are intended for the “provision of water for public human consumption.” This water must be stored, treated, and distributed among a diverse grid of communities of a single metropolitan area.

All of the citizens, businesses, and services that utilize the vital resource provided to them by the local water systems are appreciative. We notice when the electricity is out after a severe storm. It is difficult but not impossible to bath, eat, and be on with our day. However, if there were no clean water to drink, bath, cook, or clean with many daily functions would be at a stand still. It is important to keep these systems running, clean, and clear of any disturbances. Once one critical tributary halts its processes will have a monumental trickle down effect to all of the surrounding communities.

We rely on the local water supply as individuals, but what about the businesses in our nearby communities as well? All meat, fish, and poultry are processed with water before packaging. Even after food reaches the grocery store, the misting machines send water out over the vegetables to keep them fresh and crisp. Additionally, all liquids that we consume are water based and all restaurants require water to clean their place of business in order to stay open. The further we go from our own doorstep; we can see that the local water systems affect all of the lives it shares the water with, only by a larger measure, as we examine further.

Water systems provide the reservoir of treated water for consumption as well as the pipelines that carry the water to the tens, hundreds, thousands and millions that it serves. We usually don’t think about where our water comes from and how it is treated. Water is processed for our safety. This is how we are able to drink from the tap and brush our teeth and rinse in the bathroom sink without becoming sick. Sometime water can be treated on cite for a particular business or living facility or you may receive your water from a larger facility that services the city. From wherever you receive your water supply, in the end it is important to note that these pipes keep the city and surrounding areas running, so these systems have to keep running too.
