Since 90s,Find out what is slowing Your Internet Down? Articles we are using internet in our daily life, still we are struggling to find out reasons behind our slow bandwidth connection.

May be reason behind this is your internet service provider (ISP), the router or other network issues?

Check out following checklist which might help you discover reasons of slow internet connection.

Understanding of Speed and Bandwidth

When we buy internet connection from ISP, we are paying for an “up to” sum of bandwidth.

Don’t misunderstand; more bandwidth makes our internet connection faster. If you are using internet from multiple devices, it can seem slow.

What if there’s a fault somewhere.

Let’s find out how to solve this problem.

Take a Speed Test

For Speed Test, you will need laptop or computer which you have to connect to the router using network cable.

This can establish a stable connection between your device running the speed test and router.

Now open a browser and Go to www.speedtest.net and Run the Test.

Run this test 3 or 4 times over period of 10 minutes, you will get result about speed of your internet connection.

Note: Speed test taken on this platform are on servers outside of our network and sometimes internet performance is not shown accurately.

You can call your internet service provider and ask them to take a speed test on your behalf and then compare it with your internet speed result.

Troubleshoot Slow Speed

If internet speed test is not as you expected or as you paying for then restart your router. If this is not possible then unplug the power plug.

After that, wait for 30 seconds and switch ON your router.

Router will take its time to restart and establish internet connection.

Once it’s up and running, try internet connection Speed test again.

Still not working properly?

We can logically think, there is a problem either with your router or ISP.

But how do we know what causing this dilemma?

If you have one spare router with you, try that.

There are other options you can try:

  • Does internet connection speed goes up and down at different times of day? Then mainly your ISP is struggling to maintain enough bandwidth during working hours.
  • Check if you have any downloading or streaming going on your device, during internet speed test. This will definitely affects your speed test.
  • Check if anybody anonymous is using your internet for their own good.

To figure this out, check out your client connections. If you find any of this activity, switch it off or change your router’s password.

Understanding Standards

A modern WiFi standard includes two bandwidths, 2.4GHZ and 5GHZ.

2.4GHZ: This is older standard and works better for large houses because it can penetrate walls over distance. But its top speed is slower.

5GHZ:  This is newer standard and works faster but less likely to penetrate through solid walls and other barriers.

So if you are using wireless router model that supports 5GHZ and 2.4GHZ, you will have at least two channels. Save the 5G channel in that for your speediest 5GHZ devices.

What if your ISP is slow?

If you’ve tried every test possible and can safely conclude that your ISP is the reason behind slow internet speed. Then you should call them and let them know.

Sometimes an ISP try to resolve the issue from their side and sometime not.

If you find that your ISP not able to get you what you need, then it’s time to switch to the fastest internet service provider.
