Often when people start thinking about web hosting,
they learn everything they can about shared servers, dedicated servers and virtual private servers, or VPS. Yet when they hear about Mac web hosting, and maybe even start to consider it, they wonder what options are available. And often they think they need to learn about entirely new types of web hosting. So is this true? And if so, what options are there with Mac web hosting?
With Mac web hosting you get all the options that you would with any other type of web hosting. If you’re running a personal website or blog that won’t see a lot of traffic and doesn’t need a lot of space, shared Mac web hosting is widely available. And if you need more resources such as server space or bandwidth, you can also always find VPS or dedicated Mac web hosting services. Even other lesser-known types of web hosting, such as colocation and cloud web hosting, are available when you choose Mac web hosting.
So many people think that when they choose Mac web hosting, or if they’re going to make the switch, that they’re going to be limited to a Mac server and so, they’re going to be limited in options. It is true that you’re going to need to use a Mac server if you want this specialized type of hosting. Websites run from a Mac server need the Mac OS X operating system; it’s what makes Mac web hosting so special. However, it’s not the operating system or the server that you need to be worried about when offering, or deciding on, different types of web hosting. It’s how that server is used, and how it’s divided up.
The different types of hosting whether you’re talking about shared, dedicated, or VPS, really just comes down to the resources that you’ll be using from the server and how much of them you’ll need. A Mac web host can have one server that they divide up into a shared Mac web server; or they can have several, each one dedicated to be its own server for one client. Of course the number of servers nad uses for them will vary between different hosts. But generally, this is how it works with all web hosts, for all types of web hosting, including Mac web hosting.
One important thing to remember when making the move to Mac is that even though you’ll find all different kinds of servers available, they’re all also going to be more expensive. So while dedicated servers are the most expensive you can find with standard web hosting, they’ll be even pricier when you go with Mac. And while shared Mac hosting might still be the cheapest option, it’s going to be more expensive than shared hosting you find with non-Mac servers.
Don’t be intimidated by the fact that a Mac server is an Apple product and therefore, think that it’s completely different from any other type of web hosting. You’ll still have all web hosting options available to you, and the added benefits that come with using a Mac web server.
