Drug Issues - An Insight On The Awareness And Fight Against Substance Abuse

The negative effects of drug issues have become more obvious in recent years. The global scene is constantly witnessing modernization at its best and, in the case of drug issues, at its worst, considering it is partly responsible for this negative turn. Now drugs have also taken a wrong turn. Man has now come up with various ways and means to extract as much high as they could even if they have a limited stash of drugs in their possession. Clearly, substance abuse has ingratiated itself deeply into today's modern society.

Although it is common knowledge that this far from desirable vice is not something that is socially acceptable as a whole, the fact that there are so many people who are deep into it means that not a lot of attention is paid to this problem. Drug or substance abuse, more often than not, leads into uncontrollable addiction and, worse, death. Case in point: alcohol, whose worldwide fame and appeal has turned into a social drink. But the consumption of alcohol has reached excesses that could only be qualified as alcohol addiction and soon many people find that they could not last a day without an infusion of it. Abuse of alcohol is referred to as alcoholism. However, if you look at the relevant legislation on the subject, you will see that the only time the law will act on this problem is when the drunken person has demonstrated conduct in public that is improper or has caused harm to others.

To be more precise, however, our fight against substance abuse is centered on the prevention of the distribution and usage of hard drugs. The fact that these drugs are pronounced to be illegal all over the world does not stop this from being a lucrative trade. The price tag attached to even the smallest amount of any of these hard drugs is not enough to stop those who are addicted to it to do everything they could in their power to buy them. After all, they do not feel they can survive without their regular fix of the drug. Cocaine, heroin, and meth are only a few of the substances that are most abused nowadays.

Mass production and distribution of these substances is carried out by many billion dollar companies across the globe. Take nicotine, for example, which is an addictive substance found in cigarettes. Cancer is a likely result of the cigarette smoke, not to mention the fact that the effects of the nicotine can reach the brain of the user. For years, a war on tobacco smoking has been brewing, and in some countries the war is won and cigarettes are totally burned from being openly sold to the public. There have been moves to make the rules and laws applied to marijuana also applicable to cigarettes.

You would notice that this fight against substance abuse that is being waged globally does not hit on the users of the drugs or even the peddlers where they directly procure the substances from. It's the "big fish", or the companies that manufacture these drugs that are single-minded being pursued. However, this tactic seems to avail very little headway in putting an end to substance abuse especially because those who make the drugs have connection that run high in the administrative authorities. This has caused many social and activist movements to shift their gears and use other tactics. Now they are resorting to information dissemination and increasing public awareness about the negative effects of letting these drug issues go unattended and uncorrected.
