Positioning Your Chalkboard

It won’t matter how attractive and well-planned your chalkboard display is if no-one can actually see it! The positioning of your chalkboard is just as important as the display itself. The placement of a chalkboard can make a considerable impact on your business. It is important to think carefully about where you put your displays,How To Create a Chalkboard Display That Really Works - Part 2 Articles both inside and outside your premises.

Think about the areas of your premises that are likely to draw the most attention. You might have some pictures on the wall. These may well be drawing your customers’ attention, but they aren’t telling them what’s on offer! A well-presented chalkboard in the same spot could significantly boost your sales.

Perhaps there is space behind the bar for a display, telling everyone who comes to the bar what special offers or promotions are available. And what about that busy street corner outside your establishment? A well-placed chalkboard could bring in extra custom off the street.

Tips for Placing Your Chalkboards
  • Position your boards where they can be seen by the largest number of people. Inside your premises, this is where most people can see them from where they are sitting. Outside your premises, this is anywhere that gets a lot of ‘passing traffic’ i.e. passers-by or motorists.
  • Make sure your chalkboards can be clearly seen from as many vantage points as possible. High level boards should be angled downwards, and low level boards angled upwards, for ease of reading. Wherever possible, place chalkboards at eye level.
  • If there is a dull empty space on an interior or exterior wall, put a chalkboard on it!
  • If you have a forecourt, beer garden, parking area, or a wide enough pavement outside your establishment, make good use of this space by placing a free standing ‘A’ board in plain view.
  • Always place your chalkboards considerately, especially pavement ‘A’ boards. Passers-by are not likely to want to give you their business if they’ve just tripped over one of your signs! Always consider the safety aspects when positioning signs. If the pavement outside your premises is narrow, it is probably a better idea to place a chalkboard directly onto the outside wall.
  • If your boards are positioned where people will be passing by quite quickly (such as motorists or busy commuters), keep your message bold, concise and in large enough lettering for passers-by to read rapidly. In an area where customers will be able to take the message in at their leisure, information can be more extensive – but remember not to overcrowd your board.
  • Avoid placing boards in areas where they are likely to get worn or damaged.

Follow these tips and guidelines, and you will soon be producing good-looking, well-placed chalkboard displays that convey an image of professionalism and care to your premises – an impression that will attract more and more customers!
