Bathroom cabinets need to be functional and durable. In this article we will overview some of the most important aspects of bathroom cabinetry.
Whether you are remodeling your bathroom or you are building a new home, you will need to know how to choose your bathroom cabinets correctly. There are many different styles to choose from but here we are going to take a look at the size of the cabinets, storage capabilities and the type of material you should have your bathroom cabinetry manufactured from. With this type of information you can correctly choose your bathroom cabinets.
Let's begin with the type of material your cabinets should be constructed from. Personally I prefer real wood in a bathroom because if something goes wrong in a bathroom it is usually water related. If you have plywood constructed cabinetry in your bathrooms you don't need to worry, it will eventually dry out and your cabinets will have suffered no damage. However, if you have melamine, flake board, or press board cabinets and you flood your bathroom you, most likely, will have cabinet damage. These types of materials act like a dry sponge when it is added to water, it will expand and there is no way to fix the cabinet.
Bathroom cabinetry can be found in several different heights. Years ago the standard height for a vanity was 30", now this height cabinet is generally used in children's bathrooms or those who need lower vanities for height reasons. Most cabinets in the bathrooms are now at least 34" in height. This keeps you from having to bend so far over. Others are going even further and having their cabinets made to the same height as their kitchen cabinets which finishes out at 36", including the counter tops. I like this level because you can gain more storage options.
With a taller vanity you can configure the cabinet to maximize your storage area. For example, there use to be a front where the sink was on the cabinets called a false front and basically it was wasted space. With the higher cabinets you can now have the cabinet doors come to the top of the cabinet giving you extra space at the bottom of the cabinet for nice deep drawers. This storage is fantastic for towels and bathroom necessities.
A few other things you should consider for extra storage is roll out drawers off to the sides of your sink. This gives you places to store large items such as hair dryers and curling irons. These are oftentimes deep enough to store items such as shampoo and conditioner bottles. Another very handy bathroom cabinet you may want to consider for extra storage is a toilet topper. This gives you additional storage on a wall that is usually just wasted space.
When you are looking for cabinetry for your bathroom you first want to decide on the material you want them built from, the height of the cabinet, and the storage that you will get with the cabinet. Bathroom cabinets can go a long way towards the décor of the room however you also want to make that they are functional.
