Tribhuvanam is a village near the Kumbakonam in Thiruvidaimarudur taluk of Thanjavur district in the Indian state of Tamilnadu. The population consists of silk weavers, agricultural workers and agricultural land owners. Thirubuvanam is near the Cauvery River and is known as a manufacturing hub for silk sarees and clothing materials. The traditional sarees of Thirubuvanam are considered to be the second in quality.
The basic and the most conventional women dress of Tamilnadu is the ‘Pavada Davani’ which are known by the name of half saree. It is a three pieces cloth that includes a long lower garment which resembles like a petticoat or a long skirt, a blouse, and a long dupatta like strip of cloth which is about as long as a saree. This is usually worn by the village girls in Tamilnadu.
The kanchipuram or the kanjivaram sarees are known as the famous traditional saree of Tamilnadu. The designs on the whole body of the saree are woven with gold thread and the saree have different motifs on it ranging from figures to temples along the border. Not only in Tamilnadu and India, the rich silk fabric, the elaborate weaving designs and the contrasting border made the sarees famous all over the world. Many Indian traditional saree of Tamilnadu, apart from famous kanjivaram silk sarees, constitute the traditional costume of Tamilnadu. The Tribhunavanam silk saree are made by the highly skilled weavers that have floral and animal designs on them. The silk yarn is made available through the government agencies. The sarees are woven with a small box which is fixed above the loom. Women in the Tamilnadu wear silk sarees along with the finely designed blouse on special ceremonies. The Brahmin communities wear these sarees in a different way without wearing the long lower garment or skirt. The length of the saree which they wear is longer with nine yards than the usual one. It is covered on both the legs in a proper way without creating any restriction on the person’s free movement. A woman of Tamilnadu enjoys wearing these traditional sarees because of their outstanding comfort and beauty in any type of occasion.
Though weaving is an ancient craft practiced in all the regions of Tamilnadu. The sophisticated methods which have now developed through the stages of designing, printing and dyeing have elevated weaving to an art form. The two main fabric used in making sarees are cotton and silk. The fabric that are used in making the sarees are cotton sarees, silk sarees, tissue saree and many more.
To wrap a saree is an art but maintaining the saree is something which requires more attention. Generally the silk saree should be dry cleaned.
