An antenna is one of the feelers you see sticking out from the heads of bugs. Some antennas are used for feeling things, some for smelling things, and some for seeing things. They look like hairs, but actually are part of the body of the creature to which they are attached. Some kinds of fish have antennas instead of eyes.

The word "antenna" is also used for the wires from which radio sounds and television pictures are sent or received through the air. Another word for this is aerial. When radio or television waves are transmitted (sent out), the electric current that carries them is sent through a wire or rod that conducts electricity, up to a point where it must leap through the air to reach another point of the wire or rod. Some of the electric current goes out through the air in all directions and can be picked up by any receiving antenna that is close enough.
