An architect is a man who is in charge of everything connected with putting up a new building. He decides what the new building should look like when it is finished. He decides what materials should be used in making the new building—whether it should be made of wood, or brick, or stone, or anything else. He makes the plans that must be followed by the men who do the actual work of putting the building together. The architect's profession is called architecture. The architect must be both an artist and a scientist. Planning the appearance of a building is called design.

To make the building beautiful, the architect must be an artist, because beautiful buildings are works of art in the same way that beautiful pieces of sculpture are. The actual job of putting up the building is called construction. To plan the building so that it will be strong and long-lasting, the architect must know many scientific facts that it has taken men thousands of years to learn.
