It’s been said many times, but it’s worth saying again: your attitude determines more than anything else your results. So, it’s worth knowing how to improve it.
A better attitude can improve every single area of your life. This is because it is the window you look through at life. You want one that’s as clear as possible, so you can see life as it is and make the best of it.
In my work as a communication coach, I often assist my clients to improve their attitude. In time, I’ve developed a good image of what works and what doesn’t in attitude transformation. Here are some of the key techniques that do work.
1. Pinpoint irrational thinking. A negative, unrealistic attitude will typically manifest itself via negative, unrealistic thinking. The better you can track such thinking and recognize its lack of realism, the better you can challenge it and change it.
One of the best exercises you can do is to focus inward and notice the thoughts you have in certain situations. Listen to your own thinking, notice all its subtleties and thus you’re ready to voluntarily change it.
2. Move toward more rational thinking. One of the greatest abilities us human beings have is the ability to modify our thinking. You’re not a slave to the way you think. You can choose a better way of thinking and interpreting things.
Whenever you catch yourself dramatizing things and pointlessly making yourself feel bad, consciously start thinking in new and more constructive ways. As you practice, your mind will get used to this new ways of thinking and take it in.
3. Face your fears. Most of our fears our irrational; and they’re a part of irrational attitudes. One of the most effective ways to challenge them is to prove yourself in reality that these fears have no foundation.
This is where facing your fears comes in. Gently push yourself to do the things you’re afraid of doing. As you notice the real consequences this has, which are not so bad, you’re improving your confidence and making a shift in your attitude. This is the key to self-growth.
