In today's Europe, an increasing number of immigrants arrive with the hope of weaving their dreams and skills into the fabric of their new communities. As the EU grapples with integrating nearly 1.5 million immigrants annually, the challenge remains: how can these individuals be seamlessly incorporated into society in a way that benefits both them and their new communities? The EU-funded project, IGMA2, offers a structured approach to address this pressing issue.
The European Union is a prime destination for migrants due to its stable socioeconomic conditions. According to Eurostat, the EU saw an influx of approximately 1.5 million migrants in 2020 alone. These individuals come seeking better life opportunities, contributing to the cultural and economic dynamism of the region.
IGMA2, or the European Integration Agent 2, is a pivotal project funded by the European Commission under the Lifelong Learning Program. It aims to train professionals across various sectors—municipalities, employment offices, educational institutions, and non-profits like the Red Cross—to better integrate immigrants into the labor market and society at large.
The IGMA2 project employs an 8-step training methodology that enhances the skills of professionals in handling immigrant integration:
Implemented by five experienced organizations across Europe, IGMA2 not only focuses on the professional development of staff but also aims to improve the accessibility of adult education for low-skilled immigrants. This initiative is crucial in helping them enter the labor market and engage more actively in society.
For stakeholders, professionals, immigrants, and policymakers interested in learning more about IGMA2's methodologies or participating in the project, detailed information is available on the IGMA2 official website. Additionally, inquiries can be directed to Yevgeniya Averhed, the project coordinator, at Folkuniversitetet Uppsala.
From April 2015 to January 2016, IGMA2 partners conducted national pilot projects in Greece, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Turkey, showcasing the program's broad applicability and success in diverse settings.
The IGMA2 project represents a significant step forward in addressing the integration challenges faced by immigrants in the EU. By equipping professionals with the tools and knowledge to support immigrant integration effectively, the project not only enhances the lives of new EU residents but also enriches the communities they join.
